Can everyone find the way out? The Aricell primary-lithium battery factory fire

The 24 June 2024 fire at Aricell in Hwaseong, South Korea, killed 23 people. Escape arrangements and understandable training matter alongside fire prevention in battery manufacturing.

The incident

The fire occurred at a primary-lithium cell factory. Reporting on 25 June confirmed 23 fatalities after searches continued. Early casualty figures reflected an incomplete search.

Primary-lithium cells should not be described as rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Their hazards and the planned response must be assessed for the actual chemistry and process.

Evacuate before conditions deteriorate

Workers need an immediate alarm-and-escape action, without returning for belongings or investigating smoke. A developing battery fire is not a situation in which an untrained person should experiment with extinguishing agents.

Check your workplace

  • Have workers walked their escape route?
  • Does the response plan identify the battery chemistry?
  • Can new and migrant workers understand the alarm?

Make training practical and understandable

South Korea’s post-incident measures addressed migrant-worker training and facilities supporting rapid evacuation. Walking the route from the actual workstation helps reveal what a written briefing misses.

Use languages and visual instructions that the workforce understands.

Keep the route usable

Changes in stock or production layout can obstruct yesterday’s route. Check doors, stored materials and the path from each working position.

After evacuation, account for people and pass missing-person information to responders. Do not re-enter without authorisation.

Putting it into practice

During induction, walk from the new worker’s station to the exit and assembly point. Ask the worker to explain what they will do on hearing the alarm.

Apply local fire requirements to the actual facility; the Korean measures are not worldwide legislation.

Technical insight

Assess escape as well as ignition prevention

Fire prevention and the ability to escape after ignition are separate controls. Layout and storage can affect alarms, routes and exits.

Test whether a worker unfamiliar with the building can follow the actual escape route. A sign inspection is not the same as a route assessment. Battery-specific response needs the relevant material and process information.
