A rooflight is not a walking surface: the Korea Zinc Onsan fall
A worker died during roof work at Korea Zinc’s Onsan No. 2 plant on 16 September 2026. Reporting based on the company disclosure described a broken rooflight and failure of a safety-belt rope.
What the company-disclosure report said
The reported sequence involved a rooflight breaking and a rope failing during the fall. This does not establish why the rope failed, the connection configuration or a product defect.
Those matters require investigation.
Do not assume a rooflight supports a person
Fragile panels can resemble surrounding roof materials or be obscured. Identify them and provide a protected route and appropriate barriers.
Consider methods that avoid putting a person on the roof.

Use a complete prevention strategy
Prioritise avoiding or preventing a fall. Where personal equipment is required, assess anchorage, compatibility, movement, edge contact and rescue.
Consult the actual equipment instructions; appearance alone does not establish suitability.
Stop when the route changes
A blocked route is not permission to step across a rooflight. Reassess protection and the method.
Hand over the locations and controls so later workers have the same information.
Putting it into practice
Do not take a shortcut across a rooflight. Confirm the protected route before moving.

Technical insight
Appearance does not establish load-bearing capacity
Rooflights and roof sheets cannot be assumed to support a person from appearance alone. Distinguish fragile areas from the planned access route.
Define a protected route and restricted areas before access. Marking rooflights and checking harness use do not replace assessment of physical fall prevention.
