Plan the route as well as the task: a maintenance fall in Yeosu
A contractor worker died after falling during maintenance at a chemical plant in Yeosu on 17 April 2026. Access and movement deserve the same planning as the work position.
What is known
Reporting describes a fatal fall during scheduled maintenance and an investigation into the circumstances. It does not establish that the worker lacked a harness or identify a specific equipment failure.

Plan the complete journey
Consider taking tools up, changing position and returning. Where possible, avoid work at height; otherwise choose a suitable working platform and protection for the whole route.

Check your workplace
- Is there a protected route to the task?
- Have covers or guardrails been removed?
- Is protection maintained when the worker moves?
Manage temporary openings
Removing a cover or guardrail affects later workers as well as the current team. Provide protection and access control before exposing the opening.
Change the working position rather than overreaching.
Check the complete protection system
Where personal fall protection is needed, confirm suitable anchorage, compatible connection, protected movement and rescue arrangements. Do not assume a convenient pipe or handrail is an anchor.
Putting it into practice
If a removed cover interrupts the access route, stop. Arrange protected access or another method before proceeding.

Technical insight
Include access and return in the height-work plan
A platform at the maintenance point does not address travel to it or changes in posture. Assess access, work and return as one route.
Consider carrying tools and locations where both hands are occupied. Where personal protection is used, review continuity of connection along the actual route.
