A worker found inside a drum: the Shaheen incident and confined-space response
A worker was reported found dead inside a drum at the Shaheen project on 25 May 2026. The company-disclosure account said the cause was under investigation; it did not establish asphyxiation.
Location does not establish cause
The disclosure-based report identifies where the worker was found. It does not prove oxygen deficiency, a particular gas or a fall.
Keep the incident facts separate from general confined-space precautions.
First consider avoiding entry
Assess an external inspection or another method. If entry remains necessary, evaluate the space and the actual work rather than relying on whether it is called a tank, vessel or drum.
Check your workplace
- Can the task be done without entry?
- Are entry controls and standby arrangements ready?
- Who is called from outside if communication is lost?
Prepare entry and response together
Assessment must consider isolation, atmosphere, ventilation, communication and emergency arrangements. A single earlier reading is not assurance for every location and later condition.
Do not make an unplanned rescue entry
Raise the emergency response from outside. Do not enter without the required training, equipment and controlled rescue arrangements.
A filtering dust mask does not supply oxygen. Give responders the location, access and known material information.
Putting it into practice
If a colleague stops responding inside, call the emergency team from outside and follow the prepared rescue plan. In South Korea the emergency number is 119; international readers should use their local number.
Technical insight
Assess the space and task, not just its name
The opening, ventilation, residues and work inside determine the assessment needed for a vessel. Its label alone does not establish the atmospheric hazard.
Review non-entry alternatives, access control and rescue arrangements. A report describing discovery of a person does not by itself identify a specific gas or medical cause.
