Before opening a process line
HSE maintenance guidance addresses isolation and stored energy. Confirm equipment identity before breaking containment.
Understand the situation
Breaking containment can expose workers to the contents and energy inside a line. Appearance or a local nickname alone is insufficient identification; reconcile drawings, tags and operations confirmation.
Review the task
Define the work boundary, contents, temperature, pressure and isolation. Prepare recovery, access control, exposure protection and emergency communication before opening.
The actual dismantling sequence belongs in the approved process-specific procedure.
Check your workplace
- Do drawing and pipe ID match?
- Are contents, temperature and pressure known?
- Are draining, containment and exposure controls ready?
Apply the lesson
If two similar lines are present, compare the verified tag with the drawing. Uncertain identity requires resolution by the responsible team, not an assumption by the worker.
Avoid a common mistake
When work stops or crews change, hand over the open condition and restrictions. ”
Putting it into practice
Place operations confirmation, work limits, isolation, waste handling and emergency contact in the same review. Unknown contents remain unresolved.
Technical insight
Distinguish the opening from the isolation
The joint to be opened and the points preventing inflow are different parts of the plan. Headers and bypasses can leave routes that are not obvious at the work location.
Trace connections back from the work point and reconcile drawings with field identification. Additional PPE does not resolve uncertainty about which line is being opened.
Flange-opening sequence and isolation level are process-specific.
